BRAVE (Chapman/Andrews, 2012): stages of anthropomorphism

[Spoilers ahead] Pixar's BRAVE contains some of the studio's finest animated acting when it comes to the mother-turned-bear. In films about animated animals, it is always crucial to be clear about how much they should behave like human beings. Merida's mother is not able to speak any more but tries to eat with knife and fork. However, her animal instincts gradually take over her human consciousness. Thus, the degree of anthropomorphism works as a creepy ticking clock.

[Enthält Spoiler] Dank der in eine Bärin verwandelten Mutter enthält BRAVE ein paar der gelungensten Schauspielszenen im Werk von Pixar. In Filmen über animierte Tiere muss immer klar kommuniziert werden, wie menschlich sich diese verhalten sollen. So kann Meridas Mutter als Bärin zwar nicht mehr sprechen. Trotzdem versucht sie mit Messer und Gabel zu essen. Nach und nach übernehmen jedoch die tierischen Instinkte die Oberhand über das menschliche Bewusstsein. Somti funktioniert der Grad an Vermenschlichung gleichzeitig als dramaturgische Zeitbombe.
