MINUSCULE (Giraud/Szabo, 2013): Evocative sound effects

MINUSCULE - LA VALLÉE DES FOURMIS PERDUES is a theatrical feature (cg characters in live action backgrounds) based on a French pre-school tv series (several five minute episodes) about bugs and ants. Since there is no dialogue, music and sound effects are even more important than in standard cg animated features. The forest from a ladybird's point of view becomes an enveloping and engaging aural environment with directional wordless "voices" even. The insects themselves sound like cogwheels, rubber balloons, whistles or Mad Max style motorcars. There is more than a faint echo of STAR WARS Ep. IV-VI. But apart from the occasional exaggerated thump (a common problem in movies relying on pratfalls) the sound design is enjoyably imaginative.

Bottom: the overrun houseflies sound like crashed cars.

PANIC ROOM (Fincher, 2000): Endoscopic shots

Over the years, David Fincher's films have increasingly become riddled with impossible camera movements. One of his favorite devices seems to be what I call the "endoscopic shot" where the camera enters ever smaller spaces in a fast and long forward motion. After panning along a gas pipe in PANIC ROOM, the camera seamlessly slides inside it and assumes the position of the emergent gas.

LADY SNOWBLOOD (Fujita, 1973): Stills montage

Much has been written about how closely Quentin Tarantino followed the structure and style of Fujita Toshiya's SHURAYUKI-HIME (LADY SNOWBLOOD) in KILL BILL (2003/4). The Japanese genre film feels a lot less refined despite - or because - there are quite a few more radical visual storytelling choices and ideas on display (silent film like editing patterns, for example). As a clear precursor to Tarantino's anime sequence, in LADY SNOWBLOOD several flashbacks are shown in a montage of still frames, some of them historic illustrations, some obviously manga, some sepia photographs.

SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE (Park, 2005): Mysterious female narrator

It takes a moment to see through the initial flashback structure of Park Chan-wook's SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE. It takes almost two hours to understand (or confirm) whose voice is narrating the story of "lady vengeance".

SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE (Park, 2005): Offscreen sounds

Like in its predecessor SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE (2002), the protagonist of Park Chan-wook's SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE lives in a very noisy room where we can hear steps and muffled voices or radios from all around in full surround realism. This expands to the women's prison cell as well. But Park takes it even further: in the first act, we hear an audio flashback as if the conversation took place next door. And later the titular "lady" transmits a cruel group conference through a guitar amp into the room of a gagged vengeance victim to create suspense.

LA JEUNE FILLE SANS MAINS (Laudenbach, 2016): Scene transitions

In France, hand drawn feature animation is still alive. Laudenbach's LA JEUNE FILLE SANS MAINS is based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale of the same name (The Girl without Hands). However, the film's delicate style is infused with lots of gently inventive visual storytelling decisions which make up for its tried and tested plot. For example, scenes transition in ways unique to animation.

ED WOOD is probably Tim Burton's most beautifully photographed film. And fitting the B-movie mood of both Edward D. Wood's films and life, cinematographer Stefan Czapsky (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, 1990) jumps at the opportunities to light the actors from underneath like in a vintage Universal horror film.

Among all the glorious lighting concepts and effects in ED WOOD, the underlighting of Bela Lugosi (played by Martin Landau, bottom) is my personal favorite.

KILL BILL (Tarantino, 2003/4): Cartography of death

Quentin Tarantino and cinematographer Robert Richardson are usually careful to keep us oriented in space. In KILL BILL, the results of the stylized violence are often shown from high angles. This increases the distance to the victims. Flat compositions also tend to feel more comical than staging in depth.

SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE (Park, 2002): flattening bird's-eye shots

Park Chan-Wook likes to flatten the planes with his highly artificial bird's eye views in SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE. Aesthetically, this results in often strangely beautiful patterns of ground texture. Narratively, Park succeeds in limiting our perspective despite the long shot. Almost all information about surroundings or what characters see are shut out of the frame creating suspense. For similar shots, see LADY VENGEANCE (2005).

Park Chan-Wook reduziert das Bild in seinen künstlichen Vogelperspektiven in SYMPATHY FOR MR.

[If you can stomach nihilistic ultraviolence and nauseating sound design, then this is a MUST-SEE for purely cinematic reasons. Else, don't even think about it.]

Although these are longshots, they limit our view and knowledge of space.

VERTIGO (Hitchcock, 1958): High Angles

Almost all of Hitchcock's VERTIGO is seen from the subjective angle of its protagonist John "Scottie" Ferguson who suffers from acrophobia. Bird's or God's eye views have long a favorite among Hitchcock's visual devices. In VERTIGO they often but not exclusively express Scottie's feeling of vertigo when he is forced to look down from heights (the famous "vertigo effect" aka "dolly zoom"). There is at least one high angle long shot that tells the audience more than Scottie perceives and, thus, shows him as the pawn he really is in the intrigue of the first two acts.

1. The origin of Scottie's acrophobia: seeing his colleague fallen to death, 2. looking out Midge's window, 3. the vertigo-effect in the bell-tower, 4. the god's eye view over the mission (Scottie right bottom corner).
