MR. NOBODY (Van Dormael, 2009): Portrait format

Of all the distancing devices in MR. NOBODY, the 90° tilt in the scene where the narrating character Nemo is shown as being dead is probably the most obvious one. What I find interesting about it is that it allows us to get a glimpse of what films in portrait or upright format cinemascope would look like. (Yes, I am aware of the fact that since 2009 many smartphone users have accidentally filmed their cats and loved ones in upright format...)

Von all den distanzierenden Stilmitteln in MR. NOBODY ist die um 90° gedrehte Kamera wohl das offensichtlichste. Jaco van Dormael verwendet sie für eine Szene, in der die eigentliche Erzählfigur Nemo als tot gezeigt wird. Mich fasziniert daran, dass wir dadurch einen Eindruck davon erhalten, wie ein Spielfilm in hochformatigem Cinemascope aussehen würde. (Und ja, ich weiss, dass seit damals unzählige Smartphone-User versehentlich ihre Katzen und Mitmenschen im Hochformat gefilmt haben...)
