TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (Mulligan, 1962): Tell, don't show!

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is a heart-warming adaptation of Harper Lee's Southern Gothic novel, as some call it because of its subplot revolving around the protagonists' eerie neighbor Boo Radley. Pakula/Mulligan's film is a very obvious example of an almost forgotten storytelling device: "tell, don't show!" Most of the gruesome or violent story or backstory events are related to us by characters without visual flashbacks or anything like that. This not only makes the film suitable for children who will not be disturbed by dialogue that goes over their heads, but it also stimulates our imagination which is considerably more than most literature adaptations achieve.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD ist die herzerwärmende Verfilmung von Harper Lees "Southern Gothic" Roman, der dieser Stilrichtung wegen einer Nebenhandlung um den unheimlichen Nachbarn Boo Radley zugeordnet wird. Der Film von Pakula und Mulligan ist ein offensichtliches Beispiel für eine in Vergessenheit geratene Erzähltechnik: "erzähle, statt zu zeigen". Die meisten schauerlichen oder brutalen Handlungsmomente werden uns von Figuren erzählt, ohne dass wir bebilderte Flashbacks dazu erhalten. Dadurch ist der Film nicht nur kindertauglich (weil diese von Dialogen, die ihren Horizont übersteigen, kaum verstört werden), sondern regt die Phantasie des Zuschauers an, was nur wenigen Buchverfilmungen gelingt.

The gruesome details about Boo Radley as well as the attempted rape
are effectively left to our imagination. 
Besides, we can never be sure how it really happened.
