IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (Wong Kar-Wai, 2000): repetitions

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE tells the story of a man and a woman who suspect that their respective spouses have an affair. Like most of Wong's films it is composed of elliptic vignettes. But this time the director structures the plot around very few situations and locations that are revisited over and over again in slightly different ways as time passes. Very often, the repetitious nature of these events is further emphasized by recurring pieces of music like Michael Galasso's arrangement of Shigeru Umebayashi's "Yumeji's Theme".

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE erzählt die Geschichte eines Mannes und einer Frau, die ihre jeweiligen Ehegatten einer Affäre verdächtigen. Wie die meisten Filme von Wong Kar-Wai besteht auch dieser aus elliptischen Alltagsszenen. Diesmal baut der Regisseur die Handlung anhand einer kleinen Anzahl von Situationen und Schauplätzen, die immer wieder in leicht veränderter Form vorkommen. Sehr oft wird die repetitive Struktur von wiederkehrenden Musikstücken wie etwa Michael Galassos Arrangement von Shigeru Umebayashis "Yumeji's Theme" verdeutlicht.
