LE PLAISIR (Ophüls, 1952): Caleidoscopic frame fragmentation

Max Ophüls's LE PLAISIR is so brimfull of pure cinema, it is a perfect film to study. Cinematographers Philippe Agostini and Christian Matras often create frames within frames that visually separate or unite the precisely blocked characters.

ONIBABA (Shindo, 1964): Wind [Post No.100!]

Shindo Kaneto's independently produced "modern parable" ONIBABA (THE DEMONESS) is mostly taking place "within a claustrophobic sea of grass" (quote from the Masters of Cinema blu-ray cover). And this sea of grass seems to be alive because of a constantly blowing wind. A very oppressive, strange but strangely beautiful film indeed.

FINSTERES GLÜCK (Haupt, 2016): the power of "tell, don't show"

Stefan Haupt's upcoming literature adaptation FINSTERES GLÜCK is about a middle-aged hospital psychologist who is assigned to help a boy cope with the fact that he lost his family in a car accident. It contains at least one great example of "tell, don't show" in which a character's retelling of a traumatic experience is not visualized through flashback images. This usually reminds me that our imagination conjures up the most powerful images. Besides, we get to see the facial expression of the person who speaks.

Max Ophüls' films should be mandatory viewing for anybody interested in cinematography. LE PLAISIR consists of three Maupassant stories about le plaisir (the pleasure). There not only magnificent deep focus shots and text book dutch tilts but also complicated tracking shots some of which look like blue prints for Iñárritu's BIRDMAN (2014).

FINDING NEMO (Stanton, 2003): POV Flash Forward

Andrew Stanton's FINDING NEMO had one formally unexpected scene that felt so natural most people probably do not remember it. While TOY STORY introduced us to the moving point-of-view shot, NEMO took it one step further and integrated it into a first person plural point-of-view in a flash forward!

THE NAKED ISLAND (Shindo, 1960): Live-action without dialogue

Shindo Kaneto's "cinematic poem" THE NAKED ISLAND is one of the few realist live-action films that contain almost no dialogue. In gorgeous scope cinematography, the film shows us a small family living off the land of an arid small Island on the Setonaikai archipelago in south-west Japan. Except for a few emotional exclamations, we only hear school children, villagers and a non-diegetic female voice sing a few folk-songs. Music as well as foley and atmospheric sounds are present throughout. However, the characters are mostly defined by how they manage their daily chores.

In my opinion, master animator Michael Dudok de Wit's first feature LA TORTUE ROUGE (THE RED TURTLE) is one of the year's most beautiful cinematic experience. Its myth-like archetypal story is matched by a luscious visual style that still retains Dudok de Wits trademark minimalism that evokes emotions by insinuations and blank space. Over the course of the film, there are lighting conditions in practically any shade of color. However, the individual compositions are dominated by only one or two hues which re-inforce the larger basic shapes.

PRIDE & PREJUDICE (Wright, 2005): Long Travellings

In the wake of Brian De Palma's and Martin Scorsese's films, the long travelling take (not to be confused with the sustained long shot of actors moving around within the frame or even a "plan sequence") has become increasingly popular. Joe Wright seems to be particularly partial to it up to the point where it feels forced like in ATONEMENT (2007). In Wright's magnificent version of PRIDE & PREJUDICE, however, the many long tracking shots feel completely organic and do not draw attention to themselves.

[MS]

PRIDE & PREJUDICE (Wright, 2005): Group tableaux

In PRIDE & PREJUDICE, Joe Wright often stages the members of the large Bennet family in carefully composed long shots that allow us to see reactions on several different faces at the same time. This is especially noteworthy, since this standard practice of the classical Hollywood fell out of favor with directors (and audiences) when intensified continuity (editing together many short clips of close ups) established itself as the predominant visual concept.

ACE IN THE HOLE (Wilder, 1951): Hold a long shot as long as possible

Classical Hollywood comedies usually move at a break-neck pace despite a rather slow editing rhythm. The speed is all in the dialogue and performances. Billy Wilder's acid-tongued satire ACE IN THE HOLE (1951) even has an average shot length (ASL) of 17 seconds per shot according to the Cinemetrics Database. This does not come as a surprise, because Wilder often stages his scenes dynamically and in depth so that the actors perform with their whole body and move around at least as much as the camera. Because these group shots enable us to see reactions on a lot of faces in the fore- and background, he can sustain his shots for a long time. In fact, ACE IN THE HOLE feels as if the filmmakers knew exactly how long to hold a shot until a different angle becomes unavoidable - which is most often shortly before we would consciously notice the long take.

TONI ERDMANN (Ade, 2016): Singing

If Maren Ade's brilliant Cannes '16 favorite TONI ERDMANN had to be summed up in one word, that had to be unpredictable. Even though the trailer seems to give away a lot, it turns out, the basic premise of a complicated father-daughter relationship with the father pretending to be someone else is just a pretext for an investigation into the human condition and some of the most funny situations I have seen in a "serious" comedy for a long time. Absurdly funny situations, not gags or pratfalls. Real comedy, not practical jokes. Although Toni is actually all about practical jokes. Sort of. This is no movie for people with short attention spans, but because of its inherently slow rhythm, at 162 minutes it is not one minute too long. But I digress... TONI ERDMANN is one of those movies where a character unexpectedly starts to sing a whole song "live" on camera, meaning there is no non-diegetic music, just source music (which can, of course, be fake like the piano performance in VICTORIA (2015), for example) and in this case, what we hear is most certainly the production track. So no more spoilers, go see it, as soon as it is released in your country!

LA JEUNE FILLE SANS MAINS (Laudenbach, 2016): Scene transitions

In France, hand drawn feature animation is still alive. Laudenbach's LA JEUNE FILLE SANS MAINS is based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale of the same name (The Girl without Hands). However, the film's delicate style is infused with lots of gently inventive visual storytelling decisions which make up for its tried and tested plot. For example, scenes transition in ways unique to animation.

KILL BILL (Tarantino, 2003/4): Cartography of death

Quentin Tarantino and cinematographer Robert Richardson are usually careful to keep us oriented in space. In KILL BILL, the results of the stylized violence are often shown from high angles. This increases the distance to the victims. Flat compositions also tend to feel more comical than staging in depth.

KUROI AME (Imamura, 1989): Aural Flashback

Imamura Shohei's KUROI AME (BLACK RAIN, 1989) is a powerful reminder of the social impact of the Hiroshima A-bomb. A peripheral character that looks like odd comic relief in the beginning becomes gradually more human over the course of the film. In a key scene, he undergoes a flashback that we only witness on the sound track. This limitation makes it all the more powerful despite his stylized acting. In addition to the war sounds, we also hear Takemitsu's score that up to that point exclusively accompanied the visual flashbacks to 1945.

MR. NOBODY (Van Dormael, 2009): Portrait format

Of all the distancing devices in MR. NOBODY, the 90° tilt in the scene where the narrating character Nemo is shown as being dead is probably the most obvious one. What I find interesting about it is that it allows us to get a glimpse of what films in portrait or upright format cinemascope would look like. (Yes, I am aware of the fact that since 2009 many smartphone users have accidentally filmed their cats and loved ones in upright format...)

THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (Wyler, 1946): Deep focus realism

William Wyler's THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES is rightfully hailed as the mother of all home-coming films. Together with his cinematographer Gregg Toland (CITIZEN KANE, GRAPES OF WRATH) Wyler staged his large cast in elaborate compositions that neither feel cramped (in 1946, there was no other choice than the old 1.37:1 Academy aspect ratio) nor unnatural which is also due to flatter lighting than is usually associated with Toland's films. Within these long deep focus shots, the viewers attention is led to many different spots as the action is progressing.

William Wylers THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES wird zurecht als Mutter aller Kriegsrückkehrer-Filme bezeichnet.

THE DANISH GIRL (Hooper, 2015): Forced central perspective

Establishing long shots in Tom Hooper's THE DANISH GIRL (as well as in THE KING'S SPEECH) are often extremely symmetrical. A variety of wide high or low angles result in convergent vertical lines that add distortion to this central perspective. In THE DANISH GIRL especially, the divisive nature of the central relationship is mirrored in compositions that are divided in the middle (bottom image). This is visible in some of the Paris scenes (which I don't have access to at the moment).

[RV]
There are even stronger examples of forced perspective long shots in the film. Unfortunately, they are not in the clips that are available as yet.

THE DANISH GIRL (Hooper, 2015): off kilter reverse angles

Visually, THE DANISH GIRL seems to replicate and reinforce the stylistic traits of THE KING'S SPEECH (2010) by director Tom Hooper, cinematographer Danny Cohen and production designer Eve Stewart. Reverse angles during emotionally ruptured conversations are recurringly framed in a way that speaking characters appear to be on the wrong side of the frame (on the right while looking to the right which leaves the left half of the frame empty). In shot-reverse-shot they both seem to look away from each other although there is no crossing-the-line involved.

Visuell scheint THE DANISH GIRL die stilistischen Merkmale von THE KING'S SPEECH (2010) desselben Teams (Regisseur Hooper, Kameramann Cohen, Production Designerin Stewart) in verstärkter Weise wiederaufzunehmen.

STEVE JOBS (Boyle, 2015): Underlighting

Danny Boyle's and Aaron Sorkin's STEVE JOBS is one of those top-heavy experimental arrangements that work so thoroughly as entertainment that they leave you simply amazed. The protagonist's alienating nature ist often reflected by the lighting. In more than one scene there is this otherworldly underlighting glow on his face that comes from sources like computer screens or - less common - fluorescent inlays in a table.

JAWS (Spielberg, 1975): Widescreen framing

There are so many storytelling lessons to be learned from JAWS that it will probably pop up on this blog every now and then. Despite its subject matter, I would recommend it as essential viewing if only for Bill Butler's brilliant Panavision widescreen compositions. Like most of Spielberg's classics, there are always frames within frames that separate and unite characters and actions within the same long shot. Most of the time the cinemascope frame is cut in half, sometimes even by "split focus diopter" shots à la De Palma.

[MS]

I especially like the frame around the coroner (dark grey suit) who changed his mind about the first shark attack and thus gets Brody (Roy Scheider) in trouble. Although he went further away from Brody and the mayor, he still stands in between the two antagonists.
