LE PLAISIR (Ophüls, 1952): Camera unleashed

Max Ophüls' films should be mandatory viewing for anybody interested in cinematography. LE PLAISIR consists of three Maupassant stories about le plaisir (the pleasure). There not only magnificent deep focus shots and text book dutch tilts but also complicated tracking shots some of which look like blue prints for Iñárritu's BIRDMAN (2014).

PRIDE & PREJUDICE (Wright, 2005): Long Travellings

In the wake of Brian De Palma's and Martin Scorsese's films, the long travelling take (not to be confused with the sustained long shot of actors moving around within the frame or even a "plan sequence") has become increasingly popular. Joe Wright seems to be particularly partial to it up to the point where it feels forced like in ATONEMENT (2007). In Wright's magnificent version of PRIDE & PREJUDICE, however, the many long tracking shots feel completely organic and do not draw attention to themselves.

RAN (Kurosawa, 1985): Sustained telephoto long shots

Kurosawa's RAN, his epic version of Shakespeare's "King Lear" transplanted to 16th century Japan, like its predecessor KAGEMUSHA (1980) is full of flat compositions evocative of graphic woodblock prints. Although at 75, he was still a master of tightly edited action sequences, most scenes play out in long shot. He does not shy away from sustained two shots or even groups in extreme long shots photographed from far away with flattening telephoto lenses.

ACE IN THE HOLE (Wilder, 1951): Hold a long shot as long as possible

Classical Hollywood comedies usually move at a break-neck pace despite a rather slow editing rhythm. The speed is all in the dialogue and performances. Billy Wilder's acid-tongued satire ACE IN THE HOLE (1951) even has an average shot length (ASL) of 17 seconds per shot according to the Cinemetrics Database. This does not come as a surprise, because Wilder often stages his scenes dynamically and in depth so that the actors perform with their whole body and move around at least as much as the camera. Because these group shots enable us to see reactions on a lot of faces in the fore- and background, he can sustain his shots for a long time. In fact, ACE IN THE HOLE feels as if the filmmakers knew exactly how long to hold a shot until a different angle becomes unavoidable - which is most often shortly before we would consciously notice the long take.

PANIC ROOM (Fincher, 2000): Endoscopic shots

Over the years, David Fincher's films have increasingly become riddled with impossible camera movements. One of his favorite devices seems to be what I call the "endoscopic shot" where the camera enters ever smaller spaces in a fast and long forward motion. After panning along a gas pipe in PANIC ROOM, the camera seamlessly slides inside it and assumes the position of the emergent gas.

THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (Wyler, 1946): Deep focus realism

William Wyler's THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES is rightfully hailed as the mother of all home-coming films. Together with his cinematographer Gregg Toland (CITIZEN KANE, GRAPES OF WRATH) Wyler staged his large cast in elaborate compositions that neither feel cramped (in 1946, there was no other choice than the old 1.37:1 Academy aspect ratio) nor unnatural which is also due to flatter lighting than is usually associated with Toland's films. Within these long deep focus shots, the viewers attention is led to many different spots as the action is progressing.

William Wylers THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES wird zurecht als Mutter aller Kriegsrückkehrer-Filme bezeichnet.

One of the most impressive deep focus compositions and probably my second favorite scene: note the man on the phone in the back - that is where the important action is happening! (screenshot lifted from http://tcf.ua.edu/)

SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE (Park, 2002): Long deep focus takes

Aesthetically and dramatically, Park Chan-wook's SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE is an incredibly fascinating film. Park and his cinematographer seem to capture each aspect of this emotional rollercoaster (fear, sadness, disgust, hysterical laughter, horror, even empathy) in the most compelling and unique way without distracting from the content. Among other things, every now and then the action unravels gradually during lengthy deep focus long shots. Despite the constant tension, we are able to grasp the full scope of those widescreen compositions.

See also SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE (2005) for many of the same stylistics.

[If you can stomach nihilistic ultraviolence and nauseating sound design, then this is a MUST-SEE for purely cinematic reasons. Else, don't even think about it.]
