JAWS (Spielberg, 1975): Widescreen framing

There are so many storytelling lessons to be learned from JAWS that it will probably pop up on this blog every now and then. Despite its subject matter, I would recommend it as essential viewing if only for Bill Butler's brilliant Panavision widescreen compositions. Like most of Spielberg's classics, there are always frames within frames that separate and unite characters and actions within the same long shot. Most of the time the cinemascope frame is cut in half, sometimes even by "split focus diopter" shots à la De Palma.

I especially like the frame around the coroner (dark grey suit) who changed his mind about the first shark attack and thus gets Brody (Roy Scheider) in trouble. Although he went further away from Brody and the mayor, he still stands in between the two antagonists.

BRAVE (Chapman/Andrews, 2012): stages of anthropomorphism

[Spoilers ahead] Pixar's BRAVE contains some of the studio's finest animated acting when it comes to the mother-turned-bear. In films about animated animals, it is always crucial to be clear about how much they should behave like human beings. Merida's mother is not able to speak any more but tries to eat with knife and fork. However, her animal instincts gradually take over her human consciousness. Thus, the degree of anthropomorphism works as a creepy ticking clock.

Here the bear still has human eyes. When her animal instincts take over, her eyes are black like those of Bruce, the shark, in FINDING NEMO.

JAWS (Spielberg, 1975): Tell, don't show!

Steven Spielberg's JAWS was not only the world's first summer blockbuster that allegedly ruined New Hollywood and certainly demonized an endangered species. On the upside, it still is a masterclass in cinematic storytelling.
The emotional core of the all male second half is a scene in which the Ahab-like Quint (Robert Shaw) reveals his personal reasons for fighting sharks. It also basically explains why he acts like a John Huston character. There is a catch to it: Spielberg lets him tell his story in a long scene within a confined space without flashbacks or any other visual devices than the acting. This way, the most disturbing vision of horror does not unfold on the screen but in our heads where it lingers on for a while.

INSIDE OUT (Docter/Del Carmen, 2015): object colors

Pixar - and Pete Docter in particular - is pretty unashamed of using the whole spectrum of primary playdoh-colors. This works probably best in the TOY STORY universe which is based on consumer products and in INSIDE OUT because here the colors are expressing the inner life of a young child in contrast to the beautifully subdued earthly/natural colors in the outside world. The rainbow colors of the five personified key emotions informs about Riley's overall mood via memory balls in the background. These "emotional" colors are also subtly influencing Riley's clothes which change all the time.

The "rail slide" scene is basically a duel of Joy and Sadness which in the outer world is represented by blue rails and yellow trees that are emphasized respectively in the editing depending.

HALLÅ HALLÅ (Blom, 2014): restricted costume colors

As a feelgood comedy Maria Blom's HALLÅ HALLÅ is nothing to write home about. But like in many Scandinavian films the color styling is both very rich and very restrictive at the same time. In place of the worn out orange/teal standard the art department translates the overall warm/cold concept into a red/blue (turquoise) contrast with occasional warm yellow spots which makes primary colors look really beautiful.

even in the trailer there is ample evidence of this restricted color scheme.
